Whilst not well-documented the origin of the term is thought to perhaps be derived from a company name or simply a turn on “bathroom” and “potty.” Regardless of origins, it reflects a regional preference for a more informal, approachable term for a necessary facility.

Kybo

Used in scouting and by some communities in the Midwestern U.S.A.,  A “Kybo” is an informal term for portable toilets / loos. The origins of a “Kybo” generally believed to be from the early days of scouting, and it’s particularly used on camping sites, temporary scout camps and outdoor sports activities organized by scouting groups.

Honey Bucket

“Honey Bucket” is a lovely term which is used in various regions of the States. It’s also the business name of a company that provides these toilets. Historically, “Honey Bucket” refers to the honey-coloured chemicals and waste that would accumulate in the tank. It’s a friendly and less formal term for a toilet, and it’s typically used in rural or less formal settings.

Sani-John

The famous “Sani-John” being another variant of the portable toilet / loo name, similar to “Porta-John.” Sani-John” emphasizes the sanitation aspects of the toilets. The use of “Sani” offers a focus on cleanliness and hygiene, which key aspects that these toilet facilities aim to address. The Sani-John term can be used by companies to market portable toilets as clean and hygienic solutions for temporary sanitation needs.

Potty Wagon

The “Potty Wagon” again is a United States regional name referring to a large-scale portable toilet system generally mounted on a trailer that can be towed to different locations. This “potty wagon” term is used particularly when a significant number of portable toilet / loo units are required, such as during large public events or film shoots. The “wagon” part conveys its mobility, maneuverability and overall larger scale, emphasizing its capability to handle larger crowds.

Comfort Station

The “Comfort Station” being a term used to describe facilities which provide more than just portable toilet / loo services; comfort stations can include showers and changing areas as well. These units are commonly found in parks or by the beach and sometimes on large recreational parks/fields. As the term suggests there is a  higher level of comfort within the amenities, which aim to provide a more comprehensive solution for day to day visitors who may spend extended periods of time at a location.

Restroom Trailer

A “Restroom Trailer” is a more upscale version of the typical portable toilet and is used at events where a higher standard of comfort and aesthetics is desired. These type of units feature being overall more practical and offer comfort items for instance running water, battery lighting, air conditioning, and often even decorative elements which provide a level of luxury not found in standard portable toilets and are preferred at weddings, corporate events, and other high-end occasions.
